Visiting Wild Willy’s Hot Springs
Before going swimming or even just visiting Wild Willy’s, check the most recent notifications on potential hazards, water quality, or closures. Inform yourself as bathing in hot springs can bear potential risks. For your own safety and others, follow the rules of each location and respect the environment.
Location
Wild Willy’s hot springs are located off of Highway 395 near Mammoth Lakes at the Eastern Sierras in California.
How To Get To Wild Willy’s Hot Springs?
You get off Highway 395 right before Mammoth Airport heading to Whitmore Hot Springs.
From there, you will follow the paved Benton Crossing Road for about 2.5 miles until you see a dirt road on your right, right after a cow grate.
Continue on the bumpy dirt road for about 1,5 miles until you reach the Wild Willy’s parking lot.
Dirt Road
While we have seen people driving a regular sedan on that dirt road it is always best to have a 4×4 with high clearance vehicle when driving off-pavement.
We went in Fall during the dry season, so the dirt road was not that bad. This can change quickly with rain and snow in the winter. Execute caution!
If you don’t feel comfortable with dirt roads and don’t have the proper car that can handle dirt roads, don’t do it!
Parking
As mentioned, the dirt road will lead you to a parking lot on your left-hand-side. The parking lot has plenty of parking space.
Hike
From the parking lot a boardwalk leads you to the hot springs. There are actually two hot springs pools. The boardwalk will end right at the bigger pool.
The smaller heart-shaped pool is located to your left then.
Amenities
The only amenities are some porter potties at the parking lot. Other than that, there is nothing else around.
Cost
There is no entrance fee to Wild Willy’s hot springs.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit Wild Willy’s hot springs is during the week if you are looking to avoid the crowds. The weekends can get very crowded, especially during the wintertime when skiers and snowboarders flook to nearby Mammoth Mountain.
The most beautiful time to visit the Wild Willy hot springs is during sunset when the sky turns bright orange and red.
Wild Willy’s Hot Springs Camping
Dispersed camping is allowed around the parking lot area. Don’t camp next to the hot springs.
Please be respectful to the environment and leave no trace. Take your trash back out with you again.
