If you are into hot springs you have probably seen a few already, but almost certainly none like the Tabacon Hot Springs in La Fortuna, Costa Rica!
When we first came across the Arenal hot springs we were stunned by the beautiful photos. Once at the Tabacon thermal hot springs in person, we were truly blown away by the beauty of Costa Rica’s most famous hot springs.
Tabacon Hot Springs Arenal Volcano
A natural volcanic river, heated by the nearby El Arenal Volcano, flows through the hot spring resort in La Fortuna and is the source for this amazing thermal spa.
Tabacon thermal resort is the only hot springs hotel in La Fortuna that makes use of the volcanic water in its most natural way. The thermal pools are simply built along the stream of the river and that in the prettiest way you could ever imagine!
The other hot springs in Arenal are natural as well, but these need to pump the mineral rich water up to their man-made pools which are not located along the river. However, this fact doesn’t necessarily make them less nice or natural. In fact, The Springs Resort is pretty incredible too!
Thermal Pools At Tabacon
Along that river, you will find many hot spring pools and waterfalls to enjoy. From small secluded falls to a big cascade that makes the perfect backdrop for that iconic Tabacon hot springs image that you have probably seen online.
Besides the hot springs in the river, there are a few more regular type pools at the property. One has a swim up bar that serves delicious cocktails, which is super cool.
As you can see, there are many pools and waterfalls to explore. Make sure you have plenty of time to enjoy all of them.

It’s worth staying at the resort until it gets dark, as then the thermal pools and gardens light up, which creates a very romantic atmosphere. Especially for a couple’s vacation in Costa Rica, Tabacon Resort is a must-do!

Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa is not only one of the best hot springs in La Fortuna, Costa Rica but also one of the two best hotels in La Fortuna. The luxury resort is located right across the street from the hot springs.
Since the Tabacon hot spring hotel is very luxurious, it is not the cheapest resort in Costa Rica to stay at, on the contrary! But, in our opinion, staying at the hotel for one or two nights is worth the money and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Romantic Getaway At Tabacon Hotel
If you are planning to spend your honeymoon or a romantic getaway in Costa Rica, the Tabacon hot springs resort in La Fortuna should definitely be on your list. It doesn’t get much better than this!
The only exception is The Springs Resort & Spa, which is another incredible hot spring resort in la Fortuna. You won’t be disappointed!
Finding Deals For Staying At Tabacon Resort
Pro tip: If you travel off-season prices are cheaper and you will encounter fewer people at the Tabacon Resort.
Check Booking.com and switch around the dates to see when you can find a good deal. This worked pretty well for us in the past to pay lower prices for hotels that are usually a lot more expensive. You have to be somewhat flexible though.

How To Get To Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa
The Tabacon hot springs resort is located outside of the town of La Fortuna. It takes about 15 minutes to drive to Tabacon Resort Hot Springs from downtown La Fortuna.

Visiting Tabacon Hot Springs From San Jose
If you are staying around San Jose and want to visit the Tabacon hot springs without staying in La Fortuna you can take this full-day hot spring tour.
San Jose To Tabacon Hot Springs Tour
The tour includes the transfer between San Jose and Tabacon and back. After you make a stop to see the Arenal Volcano you will arrive at Tabacon to soak in the incredible thermal spa.
The tour provides lunch and in the evening an amazing dinner buffet from the 5-star Tabacon Resort is included. The food is so so good, you will be blown away.

There are different kinds of day passes for Tabacon. The admission also includes either one or two meals, which we can highly recommend. The buffet was absolutely delicious. It was probably the best buffet we have ever had!

Tabacon Free Hot Springs In La Fortuna
If you have a tight budget there are free hot springs near Tabacon Resort. These are free hot springs in La Fortuna and are located right outside the resort’s hot springs since they belong to the same thermal river.
See directions to the free natural hot springs here. This option is obviously not as chic and magical, but it’s fun too and doesn’t cost anything.
