How To Get To The Yucatan Peninsula?

The Yucatán Peninsula has two major airports:
Cancun International Airport (CUN)
Mérida International Airport (MID).

How To Get Around In The Yucatan Peninsula?

Rental Car

The most flexible option to get around the Yucatan Peninsula by rental car. Renting a car is usually our personal preference to get from place to place, especially when we explore more than one area.

It’s best to book in advance and pick up a rental car right when you arrive in Mexico at Cancun or Merida airport.

ADO Bus

Another way to get around is by taking the ADO bus. The bus network is very good and there are many bus stations around the peninsula connecting all the major hubs with each other. The ADO bus option is also very inexpensive and great if you are on a budget.

Taxi

Getting around by taxi is fairly easy too, and great for shorter distances.

Shuttle Services

If you are going long distances to and from the airport, for instance, a shuttle service makes sense.

There are comfortable airport transfers from Cancun to Playa del Carmen or Cancun to Tulum and even to other places like the ferry to Holbox Island.

You can also reserve a private aiport shuttle that is just for yourself. We did this when we had a lot of luggage and needed a private transfer from Cancun airport to Tulum and back.

Colectivo

If you are on a budget and are traveling light, taking a colectivo to get from town to town is the cheapest option. Colectivos are white vans that transfer a handful of people between points of interest. You can easily flag them of the street or enter at certain meeting points and let them know where you want to get off again. Just make sure they are going in the right direction!

What Is The Weather Like In The Yucatan Peninsula?

The Yucatan Peninsula has a Caribbean tropical climate, meaning the weather will be hot and more or less humid most of the time.

May to September

The hottest and most humid months in the Yucatan Peninsula are May to September with average temperatures around 90 F. September and June can also get quite rainy.

April & October

The bordering months of April and October are usually in the high 80s F. October can get quite some precipitation.

November to March

From November till March you will have the “coldest” months with pleasant temperatures in the low to mid 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This is also considered the dry season. You will have little rain and less humidity.

The best time to visit the Yucatan Peninsula is from around November till April. These months are also the high season in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Which Destination Is Better, Cancun Or Tulum?

Cancun and Tulum are the top and most popular beach destinations in the Yucatan Peninsula. Both are great to spend a beach vacation in Mexico, but they couldn’t be more different from one another.

Picturesque Colonial Cities Of The Yucatan Peninsula

The Yucatan Peninsula is home to some of the most beautiful and picturesque colonial cities in Mexico. When visiting Yucatan or the state of Quintana Roo we recommend visiting at least one Spanish colonial town.

The biggest colonial town in Yucatan is Merida which is also the capital of the state of Yucatan. Followed by the Spanish colonial town Valladolid located in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula. The smallest colonial town of the Yucatan Peninsula is Izamal, which is painted in all yellow and also considered a Pueblo Magico.
