Starting with our personal favorite of the best hot springs in Mammoth, the heart-shaped Wild Willy’s Hot Springs.

Also known as Crowley Hot Springs, Wild Willy’s Hot Springs Mammoth features two natural pools. One larger pool that fits quite a few people and a smaller one in the shape of a heart. Both hot springs pools boast jawdropping views of the Eastern Sierra Mountain range.

Hilltop Hot Springs (Pulkey’s Pool)

Right on the other side of Benton Crossings Road, you will find the Hilltop Hot Springs. Also known as Pulkey’s Pool, the hot springs are a popular soaking spot around Mammoth Lakes.

Hilltop Hot Springs is a man-made stone tub that is fed by pipes from a nearby small creek. The tub is about 2 feet deep and can fit about 6 people.

Through a valve on the pipes, you can regulate the hot water streaming into the hot tub and hence the temperatures.

The road to hilltop Hot Springs Mammoth Lakes is mostly paved, only the last tiny bit is on a gravel road until you reach the parking lot. To get to the hot springs from the parking lot a short walk over a narrow wooden path is required.

Crab Cooker Hot Springs

Crab Cooker Hot Springs is a round cement hot tub located between Hilltop Hot Springs and Sheperd Hot Springs. The hot springs are accessible via Benton Crossing Road or Whitmore Tubs Road.

The tub of Crab Cooker Hot Springs is fed by a pipe with hot water from a nearby mineral spring.

The small tub fits about 4-6 people and is a very popular hot springs in Mammoth Lakes, especially on the weekends.

Shepherd Hot Springs

The Sheperd Hot Springs is a fairly small hot springs tub next to the Crab Cooker Hot Springs. You can reach it via a short half-a-mile walk or take the car.

The hot springs tub is man-made of concrete bricks. The pool itself may not be the prettiest or most natural-looking one but Sheperd Hot Springs has one of the best mountain views.

Shepherd Hot Springs can fit about 4 people. The parking lot is right by the hot springs, so no extensive walking is required.

However, to get to the hot springs near Mammoth, you will have to drive about 2 miles on a dirt road. You can drive along the Whitmore Tubs Road from Whitmore Hot Springs or cut over at a later stage from the paved Benton Crossings Road.

The Whitmore Pool is located in Whitemore Hot Springs which is located right off Eastern Sierra Highway 395 not far from Mammoth Yosemite Airport.

The lap pool is only open during the summer season from May until September.

Whitmore Pool has probably the best pool views we have seen so far. The best time to go for a swim at Whitmore Pool is early in the morning when the sun rises over the mountains.

Rock Tub Hot Springs

The Rock Tub Hot Springs are located near Whitmore Hot Springs, just a short 15-minute drive from Mammoth Lakes.

The hot springs near Mammoth consist of a small oval-shaped tub next to a rock formation. The tub is fed with hot spring water via a pipe.

Rock Tub Hot Springs is often confused with Withmore Hot Springs, however, the latter is a town and no actual hot springs other than the lap pool located there.

From Whitmore Hot Springs it’s only about a Mile’s drive along Whitmore Tubs Road to get to Rock Tubs Hot Springs. Parking is right at the hot springs pool. These Mammoth natural hot springs are probably the most easily accessible hot springs in Long Valley.

The Hot Creek Geological Site is the most amazing Mammoth natural hot springs. With its snake-like bending hot river and the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain backdrop, the geological site is a must-visit when in the Mammoth Lakes / Owens Valley area.

The Mammoth area hot springs are, however, not for soaking. You can’t bathe in the Hot Creek Geological Site as the water temperatures are too hot and unstable.

You can enjoy the view of this amazing geothermal site and if you are into photography, take photos of this top Mammoth Lakes photo spot from Bree’s Lookout Vista Point.

From the Hot Creek Geological Site Parking Lot, you can take the Hot Creek Interpretative Trail to get closer to the hot river and natural hot springs. However, please stay on the trail and follow posted rules.

The Travertine Hot Springs are the most well-known and popular hot springs in the Eastern Sierras in California.

Located just outside of the town of Bridgeport, California in Mono County, it takes a 1.5 Mile drive uphill on a dirt road off of Highway 395.

There are various kinds of thermal pools at Travertine Hot Springs. You will find the first hot springs tub right by the parking lot. A short walk from the parking lot you will find the most iconic Travertine hot springs pools followed by many more hot springs scattered around the area.

Buckeye Hot Springs

The Buckeye Hot Springs is located a 20-minute drive from Bridgeport, California in Mono County. The drive is on a partially paved and partial dirt road.

The unique feature of Buckeye Hot Springs is the little waterfall that drizzles down the travertine limestone into the hot spring pools that are located right next to Buckeye Creek. So if you get too hot, you can a refreshing dip in the cool creek water.

To get there, you must walk down a short but steep path from the parking lot to the river.

There are also two hot springs tubs at the top of the hill close to the parking lot, from which you overlook Buckeye Creek.

The Benton Hot Springs is a natural hot spring in Mono County, California in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Around the hot springs grew the small former mining town of Benton.

Benton Hot Springs feature 12  hot tub sites fed by a natural hot springs source nearby.

Keough Hot Springs

The Keough Hot Springs, CA are hot springs near Bishop and Lone Pine in the Eastern Sierra Inyo County. From both towns, it is about a 7.5-mile drive to get to the hot springs.

The hot springs in Bishop are the largest natural hot springs pool in the Eastern Sierra.

Keough Hot Springs features two swimming pool-like pools. A larger with lap lanes and a smaller and hotter pool.

The large pool is 100 x 40 ft in size and 3ft to 8 ft depth and ranges from 86 – 89 degrees F in the summer to 90 to 92 degrees F in the winter. The hot pool is 15 x 40 ft in size with a depth of 2 ft and is 104 degrees F hot.

Keough Hot Springs Cost

The daily fee for adults to use the hot springs is 12 USD.

Keough Hot Springs Ditch

These are the free Keough Hot Springs, not the paid hot springs pools. The Keough Hot Springs Ditch is located about half a mile downstream of the hot springs resort.

There has been a death of a child in 2018 due to Amoeba Naegleria fowleri in the water. Even though this particular kind of incident is very rare, considering the number of people soaking in hot springs yearly, there can always be some risks involved when soaking in untreated natural hot springs. Be it your own personal health risks or risks coming from the water and surrounding area.

Always keep your head out of the water in untreated hot springs, inform yourself and know the risks that could potentially come with bathing in hot springs, and follow the posted rules and regulations of said locations.

As the Mammoth Lakes area is an active geothermal region, all the hot springs are fed with natural hot spring water. Most of the hot springs pools are, however, man-made but natural-looking.

There are also swimming lap pools like the Whitmore Pool and Keough Hot Springs Resort if you are looking to go for a swim or prefer a maintained hot spring.

What are the best hot springs near Mammoth?

If you are looking for the best hot springs in Mammoth we recommend the heart-shaped Wild Willy’s hot springs as this is our favorite. However, this is a personal choice and getting there requires a drive on a dirt road.

If you are looking for more accessible and maintained hot springs, we recommend the Keough Hot Springs in Bishop, CA.
