How To Decide On Where To Stay In Lake Tahoe Winter?
You probably ask yourself what are the best places to stay in Lake Tahoe during winter?
Should you stay in North or South Lake Tahoe? Should you rent a cabin or stay in a ski resort hotel?
There are a ton of options to stay in Lake Tahoe during winter.
North Or South Lake Tahoe Ski Cabins & Hotels
Where to stay at Lake Tahoe in winter depends largely on the type of activities you are planning to do and where you will be doing these activities.
Lake Tahoe is pretty big and it can take a long time to get from North to South Lake, especially during the busy winter season and when there’s a snowstorm.
For instance, if you are looking to go skiing in South Lake Tahoe, it’s best to stay in the South Lake Tahoe area. Otherwise, you will have about an hour’s drive coming from the North of Lake Tahoe. The same goes the other way around too.
While it’s not impossible to stay on one side of the lake and go to the other for skiing, it’s definitely not ideal. We had a ski lease in Lake Tahoe in the Northern area and the EPIC Pass which was great for skiing Northstar, but then going to Heavenly added another hour’s drive each way every time.
Long story short, we’d recommend choosing your hotel or cabin in Lake Tahoe depending on the location where you are planning on doing things.
Lake Tahoe Winter Cabins Vs Hotels
Depending on your group size you have the choice between plenty of hotels or winter cabins at Lake Tahoe. In the following, we give more details for both options.

Tahoe Winter Cabin Rentals
If you have a group of friends a winter cabin at Lake Tahoe is a great and affordable option staying at.
We prefer renting snow cabins as they, most of the time, have cozy fireplaces, maybe a hot tub, and you can prepare meals in the kitchen and hang out and relax in the living room.
In general, renting a cabin in Lake Tahoe is a really nice winter experience.
Lake Tahoe Christmas Cabins
To top this off, spending Christmas in a Lake Tahoe cabin is an awesome idea. It’s the ultimate winter experience, especially if there is snow.
One year, we spent Christmas in a cabin in Tahoe with friends and made a raclette dinner party while it snowed outside. It was one of the nicest and ‘vibiest’ Christmases, even though we were far away from family.
To reserve a cabin in Lake Tahoe for Christmas, you need to book early in advance as those cabins rent out quickly over the holidays!
Our platform of choice is Booking.com to find affordable winter rentals in Tahoe.
