Ready for a Tulum beach vacation and need some inspiration on what to wear in Tulum, Mexico and what to pack for Tulum for those day trips to the ruins and cenotes and in general things to pack for Tulum?
The small beach town south of Cancun along the Mexican Riviera is known for its boho-chic beach vibe. Over the years and with gaining popularity that unique Tulum style, where jungle and beach meet design and fashion, has established itself.

So if you are looking for affordable boho chic clothes for Tulum, this is for you.

Can You Wear Heels In Tulum?
I would not recommend wearing heels in Tulum. Tulum is a rustic beach town with a lot of unpaved roads, unlike Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Your hotel will most likely also only have sandy paths around the property since the vibe in Tulum is eco & nature.
So heels are really not practical in Tulum! In general, you will spend most of your time by the beach in Tulum or adventuring around the jungle, visiting Mayan ruins like Muyil, and swimming in cenotes around Tulum.
I personally also don’t think it fits with the Tulum style and vibe. If you must, you could give wedges a try. These are a bit more practical and fit more with the “Tulum fashion”.

Essentials To Pack For Tulum Cenotes & Water Activities
If you are visiting a cenote in Tulum or going on a snorkeling adventure along the Riviera Maya, there are some more useful things to pack to make your life easier.
Useful Things To Pack For Cenotes In Tulum
A dry bag, and a quick-dry towel. Snorkeling gear also comes in handy, especially when going on boat trips or to cenotes.
What To Wear To Cenotes?
The obvious thing to pack for a cenote is a bathing suit. If you were wondering if you need water shoes for cenotes, we would highly recommend them. Wearing non-slip shoes made for the water just makes life a lot easier. However, they are not a must! You will be fine without them as well, but having them makes it more comfortable.
There are plenty of amazing tours to take from Tulum, where all these things are super useful.
We wrote an entire blog post about the best cenotes near Tulum and as well as other top things to do in Tulum.

Things To Pack For Visiting The Tulum Ruins
Besides the famous cenotes, there are three Mayan ruins close by: The Tulum Archaeological Zone, the Muyil Ruins, and the Coba Pyramid.
Number one and two of the things to pack for visiting the ruins in Tulum are most definitely mosquito spray (especially for Muyil) and sunscreen (especially for the archaeological zone since it’s completely unshaded).
Bring a small day pack that fits your belongings, water, and a towel for swimming at the ruins beach Playa Ruinas.
What To Wear To Tulum Ruins?
When visiting the Tulum ruins also bring a sun hat, since the sun can be super harsh and there is no shade anywhere. Wear comfortable shoes that you can walk in but aren’t too hot to wear.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is an absolute necessity when at the beach in Tulum, on day trips, or really anytime when in the sun. It should be top on the list of things to bring to Tulum.
Mosquito Repellent
Another must-pack-for-Tulum is insect repellent. Especially when in Tulum in the jungle, there can be a lot of mosquitoes.
We prefer insect repellent with 20% picaridin over DEET for us, as it doesn’t damage clothes and plastics and appears to be less toxic. We recommend doing a quick google search to learn more about the topic! A good source is also the CDC and EPA.
